Research blog: Music Video Conventions

I've decided to film my music video for the song "7 rings" by Ariana Grande. This song falls under the Pop genre of music. Some common conventions in this genre are fashionable/ stylish mainstream outfits, bright vibrant colors, and positive vibes. Pop music videos often follow a storyline from start to finish and have some sort of plot to them. Sterotipcally pop music videos contain people in their teens and have a youthful feeling. For example, a party or dance event. The costumes include a signature piece and style that isn't typically worn in day to day life. Such as a fluffy coat or metallic thigh-high boots

Hair and makeup play a big role in pop music videos. The hair is usually in a trendy style and the makeup is dramatic and matte. Additionally, pop music videos are heavily edited. Creative transitions that connect each shot; ink, wipe, and certain effects. Also, inverted and two-sided screens are common editing effects.

Dance is heavily infused in pop music videos. Most pop songs contain a dance break. Professional dancers are used to pulling it together. The choreography is infused with different genres like dance-hall, ballet, and mostly hip-hop. The vibe of the song is a huge part of what the dancing and staging of the music video would be. For example, in a pop teenage romance type of video, the choreography would be minimalistic with more modern contemporary styles of dance.
In conclusion, there are many interesting and crucial conventions used in Pop music. Each and every single one of them is crucial for the phenomenal pop music videos.
