Research: How to Make a Short Film
Overall this video was very helpful and offered a lot of knowledge to creating a short film for us. One of the main things we learned was that in short films only do what you have the resources to do. An example I learned was when it comes to sound. If you the filmmaker know you don't have the proper resources for the audio heavy film then make sure you work around that and try to not make a dialogue-heavy short film. Some other key thing I learned about making a short film is to let a theme guide your story. When making a decision for this story do the opposite of what you think. If you think you should do this do the opposite because that is what your audience will be expecting. This is to keep your audience focused on the film and interested in everything that happens because the tension is just building and building. Another thing I learned is that preparation is key. To make a successful short film you have to plan out everything in your storyline to make sure it flows with the theme. Themes are so important when it comes to short films because it is what the planning of the film is based on. Camera angles, sound, and so much more is all based on the theme so the audience can follow along. Although preparation is very important things may not always go as planned all the time, sometimes you have to go off plan and figure out what works. A final detail I learned was when it comes to using "your" resources. An example of this was when it comes to your actors, since you already have your cast make sure your script plays to the strengths of your actors. This also helps when it comes to choosing the right camera angles for your short film's genre. In a short film, you need them to perform at their best to make sure the vision of the short film is properly executed. The last and most important thing I found when making a short film is that when creating the film you have to take a break sometimes. After looking and focusing on the short film so much you can become numb to the vision of the short film anymore. It's good to use the time to your advantage and step away every once and awhile to make sure you are still truly "seeing" your short film. We think that everything we learned throughout the video on short films will be very helpful. There are common misconceptions about short films and just movies and watching this youtube video on short films helped us learn about these short films. We are now even better prepared for how to write our script to execute our pitch to the best of our abilities. Now that we have gotten an insight into the short film world we will be able to make the best possible decisions for our own short film. This video was overall so helpful.
