Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the full-length movie

 Short Film

Today I watched the short film 9. This is a seven-minute-long animated short film. I really enjoyed watching this short film. The characters were really unique. I honestly liked the rag doll's appearance of some and the robotic appearance of others. The setting was also very unique and cool. It had a post-apocalyptic feel and somewhat reminded me of Wall-e. The sound is what really made an impact on me most though. There was no dialogue in the short film. The only sound really heard is diegetic and score. The lack of sound helped set the mood of the short film a lot. It made moments feel more scary and suspenseful. The sound of the robotic spider characters made me feel as if I was inside the film. The plot was interesting too. The main character is a rag doll-like with a 9 on its back. 9 seems to have had a mentor or a friend in the past. 9's friend has the same appearance but with a 5 instead of on its back. The mentor/friend seems to have saved 9 and died at the hands of a spider-like robot. 9 seems to have grown up and faces a spider again. 9 survives this incident and is seen putting two pieces of something together. One of these pieces is something 5 had given to 9. The pieces drop on the floor and begin to show a bunch of holographs with the same appearance of 9 but with different numbers on their backs. One of them is 5 and the short film ends. The ending confused me a bit but overall I liked this short film a lot.

Full-Length Movie

I have now watched the full-length film 9. It was about an hour and 20 minutes long. The film was amazing. It was very adventurous and there were so many surprises. The animation was so advanced and creative. There were many acts of heroism performed by many characters. It was also very sad and depressing. I think it was sad because a lot of characters passed away. Especially characters that had a good personalities. Some of them sort of grew on me. You got to learn a lot about the characters and their journey. The plot was very interesting and full of mystery. I like how the film showed it's better to do things with a group, instead of being alone. Because in the beginning some of them were divided, but then they were united. In my opinion, that is a very important message. Also, I like the flashbacks and the background story. Also, the characters were fearful in beginning, but they faced their fears to do what's right. I also think that is very important. I felt it gave the audience more of an understanding of what was going on. The flashbacks also added to the drama.

The Short vs. The Full-Length Movie

I have watched both the short film and movie "9".One major difference was the use of dialogue between the two. One of my favorite things about the short film was its absence of words. In the full-length movie, they did continue this aspect. The movie did explain why they could not speak in the short film, which was a cool addition. Another difference was the explanation. In the short film, they quickly showed the necessity to understand the plot. , who is the good guy, who is the bad guy, and why, whereas the movie had a much more in-depth plot with side journeys and more explanation. Another difference was the number of characters shown. In the short film, there were three characters. n the movie, there were characters 1 through 9, the scientist, and a multitude of robots. The mis en scene for both films was very similar. In both, the characters were rag doll-like figures. While the short film used body language as its sole source of communication and the full-length movie did not, both films did a great job of communicating with it. The lighting of both the short film and the movie was grungy. I especially liked this look during the short film. It made it easy to identify that the movie was during a post-apocalyptic time. An editing technique they both used was using flashbacks throughout the movie. They also had many common camera angles, shots, and movements (C.A.M.S) between the two. A few were, over the shoulder, tracking, high angle, low angle, medium shot, and an establishing shot. Both of these films were amazing and I enjoyed them both.
